What is Photorejuvenation and How Can it Benefit Me?

There are many ways that light can be harnessed to help treat the various conditions which affect the skin as we age. One thing which can happen to the skin as time goes on is known as photoaging. However, there is a treatment that your South Bay medical spa may be able to provide which can help turn back the clock on the process of photoaging. This is known as photorejuvenation.

Photorejuvenation is used to reduce the signs of photoaging, and photoaging, is the changes that happen to the skin as it is exposed to certain kinds of radiation. Both UVA and UVB rays begin the process of photoaging. The condition may also be known as dermatoheliosis.

There are actually three different types of photorejuvenation. Not all of these techniques involve lasers, although the most common of them uses a laser treatment to create the desired effect. There are also techniques which are done that use chemicals to create a new surface of the skin, or a device which emits radio frequency pulses to do the same thing that lasers do in other treatments.

Laser treatments improve the appearance of the skin so well because they affect so many different imperfections of the skin. Wrinkles, damage from the sun, scars from trauma and from acne, spider veins, stretch marks and other similar conditions can all be corrected through the proper applications of photorejuvenation. Usually, photorejuvenation will be performed with an ER: YAG or a CO2 laser.

Instead of using other laser techniques that have been done in the past, more modern photorejuvenation procedures use what is now known as a fractional approach. This is because only a portion of the area which is being targeted by the laser is actually going to be treated. Normally, this will be the deepest layer of the skin.

There have been clinical trials which have demonstrated the usefulness of this type of treatment. A group of researchers from Cornell University in 2004 concluded that this was an effective treatment. They also determined that the side effects were minimal, which is always a concern with cosmetic treatments.

Because photorejuvenation and other associated laser treatments are non-invasive and carry a very low risk of side effects, it is becoming the most recommended way for patients to get cosmetic improvements made to their skin. Many feel that risking invasive procedures for cosmetic gain is unwise, but with very little risk, photorejuvenation is a great choice for those looking to improve their look.
